My inspiration comes from experiences of daily life; as an animal lover, “foodie,” music lover, daughter, mother, grandmother, foster mother, and a labor and delivery nurse and childbirth educator.
I consider the daily details of our ordinary activities as things that can jolt us out of our complacency and provide the impetus to re-examine life’s meaning. In writing about theater, Chekhov stated; “What happens on stage should be as complicated and just as simple as things are in real life. People are sitting at a table having dinner, that’s all, but at the same time their happiness is being created, or their lives are being torn apart.” Therefore, I paint daily life as I feel it, because that life is the tool that shapes us and can speak to us about who we are. In some of my paintings I paint moments in life that simultaneously appear colorful and happy, yet a deeper look will often elicit a more serious theme.
In the initial stage of my work, I begin drawing and let my subconscious takeover the pencil. This serves as an arousal period, and usually leads to sketches of various episodes in my life that can stir the imagination. Next, I redo the sketch on canvas or paper, continue drawing with oil and then finish with a paintbrush. I use my intuitive nature to guide the color scheme.
